  About The Bonus Point Band

An updated concept in learning has been developed and is being implemented in classrooms everywhere. By introducing songs with corresponding lesson plans, created by an actual educator, teachers are helping students catch onto concepts such as nouns and geology. Usually viewed as mundane, these topics are now disguised as FUN! (gasp!) It’s true. With the Bonus Point Band’s debut CD “Your Mind is a Muscle,” learning is made easier and, in turn, more enjoyable for everyone!

Creator and educator Ash Kizer combines catchy beats and thoughtful lyrics to create a hook that reels kids into education.  Using music to his advantage as the universal language, Kizer is able to incorporate lessons within the songs to create an educational concert within the classroom. “Your Mind is a Muscle” is, as Kizer puts it, “silly and serious simultaneously – kind of like chocolate-covered raisins.”

Kizer has a solid musical background, but he also loves teaching. Before the publishing of “Your Mind is a Muscle,” Kizer’s students at Highlands School in Birmingham, Alabama served as advisors on every aspect of it, offering enthusiasm for ideas and criticism as well. “My students’ input was crucial to the production of the CD,” said Kizer. “This project was created for them and, so far, has been used with many other students ages eight to twelve.”

"The Bonus Point Band project incorporates solid musical writing and performing to present academic topics in a fun and retainable manner,” said Mark S. Crawford, Professor of Music at Tennessee State University, Nashville. “The songs are memorable, and the accompanying activities promote retention through application. The musicality and the teaching methodology are very well thought out."

In addition to educators, parents are raving about the debut CD as well. “The Bonus Point Band has opened a new dimension in the realm of children's music,” said Dr. Shane Buggay, orthopedic surgeon whose children once attended Highlands School.  “From the first song, I was hooked. Kizer’s methodology in mixing music and education is pure genius. Believe it our not, I listen to the CD without my kids in the car.  It’s that good.”

Twelve songs comprise the CD with corresponding activity sheets for each.
